Why do I need a will?

A will is a legal document and your chance to state what happens to your things when you die. It includes details about properties, accounts and possessions (your estate) and you get to decide who gets what (beneficiaries). If you have children under the age of 18, making a will allows you to legally state who (legal guardians) and how they should be cared for. Read through our guide, Do I Need a Will?, to understand why they are so important.

Dying without a will is known as dying intestate. The rules of intestacy  dictate how your estate is distributed. Here’s what could happen:

  • Your spouse or civil partner may not inherit everything if you have children.
  • Unmarried partners receive nothing, no matter how long you’ve been together.
  • Children under 18 may have their inheritance controlled by the court rather than a trusted guardian.
  • Distant relatives could inherit instead of close friends or charities.
  • If no legal heirs are found, your entire estate goes to the Crown.

If you already have a will, that’s great! However, we advise anyone who got a free will, or a will made quickly to review it with us. Free wills and quick fixes often miss crucial details—like funeral wishes, digital assets, or even proper witnessing. We offer a free review to check whether your current will still reflects your wishes. Many wills written years ago or for free are out of date or legally weak. Take a look at our guide on Free Wills for more details.

Yes. However, unlike other online will providers, this isn’t an simple tick-box, questionnaire scenario. We meet with you (online) to provide tailored, comprehensive financial and legal advice, so that you can make informed decisions. We offer secure video calls nationwide and will guide you through the whole process personally. No online forms, no bots, just genuine help and expert advice. Our Making a Will Checklist details everything we’ll ask you about and what you need to consider.

You can leave different types of gifts in your will. These can either be specific items like jewellery, vehicles or artwork or you can make a residuary gift which is a percentage of your overall estate. Donations to charities or organisations are typically residuary gifts rather than a lump sum of money, simply because a sum of money can lose value over time. Discover how leaving money to charity could save you money
